The Client

Acadian Supreme is one of the largest lobster processors in Prince Edward Island. In 2017 alone, they processed 1.2 million lbs of lobster.

They use a 3650-gallon cooker to boil the lobster each production day. They maintain a constant temperature of ~97 °C during this cooking process. At the end of each day or when maintenance is required, this water is disposed and the next day starts with heating a new supply of cold water to 97 °C. This takes ~2 hours to complete.

The Task

The team was tasked with the creation of a design able to recover heat from the hot processed water being disposed from the cooker at the end of a production day or when maintenance is required.

Because there is limited space in the facility, the team was advised to use the outdoor space near one of the exits for the design. This proposed space was measured to be 2.5 by 6.5 meters with no height constraint.
